Kenneth
Saatjian grew up in a family of artists. His father sang opera in
six languages and his mother, also an accomplished singer, accompanied
Ken's father on the piano. Ken's mother, Mary, enjoys painting in
oils and watercolors. Therefore, it was no surprise when Ken took
and early interest in the arts. At a young age, Ken enjoyed playing
musical instruments and drawing sketches. Ken now plays and gives
instruction on the clarinet, sax, guitar, banjo, and pedal steel
guitar.
In college, Ken focused on the fine arts and became
involved in jewelry design. He began his jewelry career as a silversmith
in California. At this time while visiting Whitefish, Montana, Ken
met his wife, Patricia. They
moved to Albuquerque, New Mexico where Ken could train as an apprentice
goldsmith, learning the craft from accomplished master goldsmiths.
For the next several years, in addition to learning the craft of
goldsmithing, Ken continued his studies in jewelry through the Gemological
Institute of America receiving certificates in jewelry design and
becoming a graduate gemologist. In 1984 Ken and Patricia decided
to move to California where Ken was offered the opportunity to work
as a designer, gemologist, and goldsmith for a prestigious designer
jewelry gallery, Ken worked in the gallery as a designer for ten
years.
It was always Ken and Patricia's dream to start their
own jewelry business, which would focus attention on unique traditional
and contemporary jewelry designs. The Saatjian's always hoped to
return to their favorite state, Montana, to raise their son and
work. Finally in 1994, after years of planning, Ken and Patricia's
dreams became reality. They moved to Bozeman to plan the construction
of their own jewelry gallery in the new Oakwood Square Shopping
Complex. After several months of exhausting work, their gallery
of fine designer jewelry, the Jewelry Studio, opened in December
1994.
Ken has over 25 years of experience as a goldsmith,
diamond setter, designer, and GIA Graduate Gemologist.
